What This Means
ATS screening is parsing, not a magic keyword score
Most ATS tools extract your headings, jobs, dates, and skills into a structured record. If that extraction breaks, the rest of the rewrite does not matter. If the file is readable but the relevant work is buried, a human still passes you over.
A useful ATS resume is simpler than the internet makes it sound. Make the file easy to read, use the employer's language only where it is true of you, and leave the rest shorter instead of stuffing it.
Parseable Format
Start with a file the software can actually read
Fancy layouts look polished in a portfolio. They are a poor default for job applications. If contact details live in a sidebar graphic, or experience sits inside a table, the parser can drop the facts a recruiter needs.
- Use a single column and ordinary headings such as Experience, Education, and Skills
- Put your name, email, phone, and links in plain text, not icons or a header graphic
- Skip tables, text boxes, and multi-column layouts that scramble extraction
- Save a clean .docx or a simple text-based PDF, not a designed image of a resume

Use a format the ATS can parse
Keep a single-column layout, standard headings, and plain-text contact details. Avoid tables, text boxes, icons-as-text, and decorative columns that break extraction.

Match the posting only where it is true
If the employer names a tool, method, or domain you already used, say it the way they say it. If you have not done that work, leave it off.

Do not keyword-stuff
Repeating the same phrase, hiding text, or dumping every synonym from the posting is easy to spot. Put the real matching work where a human can find it in a skim.

Keep your real work history
Do not drop jobs to look more focused, and do not invent titles, tools, or metrics. If a number is not already on your resume, do not add it.

Aim the same story at that one job
An ATS pass still has to survive a recruiter skim. Rewrite so the relevant proof is easy to find, then write a cover letter for the same role.
